What is the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO)?

The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) is a prominent Eurasian political, economic, and international security organisation, comprising 10 member states. Established in 2001, the founding members were China, Kazakhstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. The group expanded in 2017 with the inclusion of India and Pakistan, followed by Iran in July 2023 and Belarus in July 2024.

In addition to its full members, several other countries are associated with the SCO as observers or dialogue partners.

The SCO holds the distinction of being the world’s largest regional organisation in terms of both geographic scope and population. It covers approximately 24% of the world’s total land area and includes about 42% of the global population.

Security Cooperation: Joint efforts to combat terrorism, extremism, and separatism.

Military Activities: Conducting joint military drills and sharing strategic intelligence.

Economic Cooperation: Promoting trade, investment, and development across member states.

Cultural Cooperation: Fostering cultural exchange and people-to-people ties among member nations.
