न मंत्रम नो यंत्रम तदपि च न जाने स्तुति महो
न चाह्वानं ध्यानं तदपि च न जाने स्तुतिकथा
न जाने मुद्रास्ते तदपि च न जाने विलपनम
परम् जाने मात स्त्वदनुसरणम् क्लेश हरणम
विधेरज्ञानेन द्रविण विरहेण लसतया
विधेया शक्यत्वा त्त् व चरण याेर्या च्युतिर्भूत
तदेतत् क्षमतव्यं जननी सकलोद्धारिणी शिवे
कुपुत्रो जायेत क्वचिदपि कुमाता न भवति
पृथिव्याम पुत्रास्ते जननी बहव: संति सरला:
परम् तेषाम मध्ए विरल तरलोहम तव सुत:
मदीयोSयं त्यागः समुचित्मिदं नो तव शिवे
कुपुत्रो जायेत क्वचिदपि कुमाता न भवति
जगन्मातर्मातस्तव चरण सेवा न रचिता
न वा दत्तम देवी द्रविणमपि भूयस्तव मया
तथापि त्वं स्नेहम मयि निरुपमम यत्प्रकुरुषे
कुपुत्रो जायेत क्वचिदपि कुमाता न भवति
परिक्त्यकता देवा विविधविध सेवा कुलतया
मया पंचाशीते रधिकमपनीते तु वयसि
इदानीं चेन्मांतस् तव यदि कृपा नापि भविता
निरा लंबो लम्बोदरजननी कं यामि शरणम्
श्वपाको जल्पाको भवति मधुपाको पमगिरा
निरातंकोरंको विहरति चिरं कोटि कनके:
तवापर्णे करने विषति मनुवर्णें फलमिदम
जनः को जानीते जननी जननीयम जपविधो
चिताभस्मालेपो गरलमश्नम दिक्पटधरों
जटाधारी कँठे भुजग पतिहारी पशुपतिः
कपाली भूतेशो भजति जगदीशेकपदवि
भवानि त्वत पाणिग्रहण परिपाटी फलमिदम
न मोक्षस्यआकांक्षा भाव वि भववाङ्छापि च न में
न विज्ञानापेक्छा शशिमुखी सुखेक्छापि न पुनः
अतस्त्वाम संयाचे जननि जननं या तु मम बै
मृडाणि रूद्राणी शिव शिव भावनीति जपतः

नाराधितासि विधिना विविधौपचारे:
किं रुक्ष चिंतनपरैर्न कृतम वचोभि:
श्यामे त्वमेव यदि क्विंचन मय्यनाथे
धत्से कृपामुचितमम्ब परम तवैव
आपत्सु मग्नः स्मर्णम त्वदीयं
कारोमि दुर्गे करुणार्वेशी
नै तचछठत्वं मम भावयेथा:
क्षुधा तृषर्ता जननीं स्मरन्ति
जगदंब विचित्रमत्र किं
परिपूर्णा करुणास्ति चेन्तमयि
अपराधपरंपरपरम
न हि माता समुपेक्षते सुतम
मत्सम: पातकि नास्ति पापाघ्नीं त्वत्समा न हि
एवं ज्ञात्वा महादेवी यथा योग्यम तथा कुरु

Meaning in English

Mother, I know neither mantras nor yantras; alas, I do not even know how to praise you properly. I do not know the rites of invocation, nor the ways of meditation; I lack knowledge of scriptures and stories. I do not know your mudrās, nor do I know how to lament in heartfelt sorrow. Yet one thing I do know: to follow you, to walk after you — that alone can remove all pains and all misfortunes.

O benevolent Mother who saves everyone, I do not know the formal method of worship. I have no wealth to offer; I am naturally lazy, and I cannot perform a perfect ritual. For all these reasons I have come to serve at your feet. Forgive the mistakes I have made, for a son may be unworthy, but a mother is never unmotherly.

Mother, on this earth there are many simple, devoted children of yours, yet among them I am the most restless, your most fickle child. Few are as capricious as I am. My renunciation is hardly fitting for you, for a bad son may exist in the world, but there cannot be a bad mother.

O Jagadamba, Mother, I have never properly served at your feet. I have not even offered you much wealth, yet you show incomparable affection to a wretch like me — and that is because sons who err may be born in the world, but there is no such thing as a mother who is unmotherly.

O Parvati, mother who bore Ganesha, while I used to serve other gods I became busy with many duties. After long delay I abandoned even the gods; I can no longer perform their worship or hope for any help from them. If your grace does not come to me now, left without support, to whom shall I turn?

O Aparna, if even one syllable of your mantra reaches the ear, its effect is such that the foolish outcast speaks sweet, honeyed words and becomes an excellent orator. A humble man becomes as wealthy as millions of gold coins and lives boldly and fearlessly for long years. If the hearing of a single syllable yields such fruit, who can imagine the supreme result attained by those who practise japa properly?

Bhavani, those who adorn their bodies with the ash of funeral pyres, who make poison their food, who live naked like the digambaras, who wear matted hair and keep the serpent king Vasuki around the neck as a garland, and in whose hands the skull-bowl shines — even those lords of ghosts, lords of creatures, who alone carry the title of Lord of the World — how did they attain such stature? This honour came only through the ritual of your hand-fastening. Their importance increased because they were wedded to you.

Mother who bears the moon’s radiance upon her face, I do not yearn for liberation, nor do I desire worldly grandeur; I seek neither knowledge nor pleasure. Therefore my only prayer to you is that my life be spent chanting the names: “Mṛdānī, Rudrānī, Śiva Śiva Bhavānī.”

O Shyāma, I have never been able to worship you with all the prescribed offerings. My speech, ever harsh and thoughtless, has committed many sins. Yet you, by your own effort, cast a glance of compassion upon a helpless wretch like me — Mother, such mercy is fitting only to you; only a merciful mother like you can shelter a child like me.

Mother Durga, ocean of compassion, sovereign of the great Lord! I remember you today in distress, something I had never done before. Do not call this my cunning, for only a child in hunger and thirst remembers his mother. Jagadamba, is there any wonder that your full grace rests upon me? Though a son may commit sin after sin, a mother does not forsake him. Great Goddess, there is no sinner like me and no other sin-absolving mother like you; knowing this, do what you deem proper.
