Do You Want To Adopt A Child?

If you are childless or wish to adopt a child for any other reason, here is the process:

1. If Indian prospective parents are interested in adopting an orphaned, abandoned, or surrendered child, they must first visit the website of the Central Adoption Regulatory Authority (CARA), apply online, and register themselves.

2. The applicants (prospective parents) must select a group of two or more states from which they wish to adopt a child, and also fill in the required information regarding their future child.

3. Note that in almost every district of the state, there are specialized adoption agencies where orphaned, abandoned, or surrendered children are housed under government supervision. These agencies complete all legal formalities related to adoption and upload the relevant information on the portal. The children are declared legally free for adoption, and the list is displayed on the CARA portal through the State Adoption Agency. From here, prospective parents are matched with children, and the adoption process is carried out at the state/district level.

4.In the applicants’ home state/district, the specialized adoption agency will conduct a home study of the prospective parents and upload the report on the relevant portal. This report will serve as the basis for adopting a boy or girl from anywhere in the country.

5. Adoption by prospective parents depends on the availability of a suitable child. This process can take anywhere from three months to two years.

6. In every district, a Child Welfare Committee and Adoption Committee is formed under the government, which conducts interviews to assess the suitability and compatibility of the prospective adoptive parents. As part of the process, the reserved child is introduced to the prospective parents within one month of reservation.

7. During the above process, if the prospective parents refuse after meeting the child, or if the adoption committee finds the parents unsuitable, a written report will be uploaded to the portal. The next applicant in the queue will then be given the opportunity.

8. If both sides agree, the child will be handed over to the prospective parents for pre-adoption foster care through the District Child Protection Unit/Child Welfare Committee. After that, the final adoption order will be granted to the parents through the District Magistrate.

Eligibility:
* The combined age of prospective parents should generally be a maximum of 90 years.
* They must be physically, mentally, emotionally, and financially capable.

* They should not have any life-threatening medical condition.
* They must not have been convicted of any criminal offense.
* They must not be accused in any child rights violation case.
*For married couples, the consent of both partners is mandatory…..etc.
