How to Build a Career in Classical Dance or Music

India is a land of diverse art forms. From East to West and North to South, every region is rich in folk traditions, and in the same way, classical dance and music also vary according to cultural zones. These art forms are not just a reflection of regional identity but are also rooted in ancient scriptures, which is why they are called classical dance and music.

Popular Classical Dance Forms of India

In North India, Kathak is the most popular classical dance form, while in South India, Bharatanatyam holds a special place. Along with these, other forms like Kuchipudi and Mohiniyattam are also widely recognized and celebrated.

Career in Dance and Music

If you want to make classical dance or music your profession, the first step is proper training. Begin by learning from a skilled local guru in your city. Later, for specialization, seek guidance from renowned masters in bigger cities. Sometimes, being under the mentorship of a great guru itself can give you lifelong recognition—provided you are a dedicated and deserving student.

Academic Pathway

Formal education is equally important for building a career in this field.

Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Uttar Pradesh, offers specialized courses in dance.

Several other UGC-recognized universities across India provide Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in classical dance and music.

Pursuing a Doctorate (Ph.D.) can further enhance your career prospects.

Institutions like Prayag Sangeet Samiti, Allahabad, also offer recognized degrees such as Prabhakar and Praveen, which can help you secure medium-level jobs, such as music teacher positions in state-level government or private schools. With a Ph.D., you can become a college professor. Many universities also appoint guest faculty until permanent positions are filled.

Also, dance or music graduate may apply for district art and culture officer under public service commission in some state. This is level 9 post in Bihar.

Beyond Jobs: Independent Career Options

If you don’t wish to go for a regular job, there are several independent career paths you can explore:

Build your portfolio and regularly apply to the Department of Art and Culture for opportunities.

Form your own dance/music group and start performing at cultural programs, even if initially the pay is low. Gradually, your reputation will grow, and you’ll be invited to perform at festivals and government events.

Open your own music or dance academy. Expand by creating branches in different parts of the city and maintain strong connections with schools to get performance opportunities for your group.

Like any profession, starting out may seem challenging. But with persistence, dedication, and passion, success in the field of classical dance and music is very much achievable.
